Zola Moon-Almost Crazy CD
This is a neat, funky little blues album by a quartet out of Cali., fronted by, the some times foul mouthed and harmonica playing, Zola Moon. Nothing too outrageous here. You've got 11 songs about what you'd expect from a blues singer: lost love, fighting, and, of course, having the blues. The high point of the album for me was when the music deviated from the standard blues game, into the more jazzy teritory of "Alley Cat", where Zola sounds like a bit of a cross between Janis Joplin and Ertha Kit! I wouldn't be surprised to hear from this group on national radio over the next few years. Even though this IS for sure, a blues album and it has enough raunchy leads to please fans of the classic blues artists, due to it's being less guitar driven than most blues, it makes it more palatable to pop-minded listeners. But that also brings up this question in my mind: How "real" is "the blues" for Zola? In the blues and punk scenes more than any other, authenthicity are as important as the music, if not more so, and I can't say how well, she stands up. The "living the blues" part of playing the blues seems alittle far-fetched to me, but that's not important to me or any one out of the blues musician circle. But she just might come and kick my ass for saying that. Teehee.... Info: www.ZolaMoon.com colddish@jps.net Cold Dish Managment/ 4553 W. 171st St./ Lawndale, CA 90260/USA
